One thing no one seems to have bothered mentioning is that Kodak spun off their chemical division, Eastman Chemical, in 1994. Then they went on a rampage literally blowing up their facilities in Kodak Park in Rochester so they wouldn't have to pay property taxes on them.
Presumably they can still ramp up some production there but it all sounds a bit odd. It's looking like a rerun of their announcement in 2018 that they were getting into Bitcoin (the "KodakCoin"). Their stock took a huge pop before returning to the doldrums. At least this venture has a little more plausibility to it than that nonsense.Michelehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11446439300213187649noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-253123551511703819.post-8380412934930490592020-07-30T13:03:33.994-04:002020-07-30T13:03:33.994-04:00The story continues with KODK. I hope it's not goodbye, but just a while until we listen again the hoots of the night owl on twitter?
Meanwhile here are some thoughts picked from the editor of The Stock Trader’s Almanac:
The Stock Trader’s Almanac 2017, points out Presidents’ Day as the poorest performing holiday of the eight holidays that are tracked. Unlike the others, the trading day before and the trading day after this three-day holiday weekend are both down on average over the past 34 years (that's tomorrow and next tuesday!).
A long holiday weekend could be just the excuse traders need to trim long positions and book some profits.
Using a 20% decline as the definition of a bear market, there have been 11 bull markets including the current one and 10 bear markets since 1949. The previous ten bull markets lasted an average of 1770 calendar days and produced gains of 161.4%. Within these 11 bull markets there were 23 corrections ranging from 10% to 19.9% for an average of just slightly more than two corrections per bull market. The current bull market, at 2898 days old and 244.1% gain is above average in duration, magnitude and number of corrections. However, there have been longer bull markets with even more corrections.
The longest the S&P 500 went without a 10% correction was 2553 calendar days from October 1990 until October 1997. The second longest streak without a correction occurred in the last bull market that ended in 2007 when the S&P 500 went 1673 days.
The S&P 500’s current streak of 368 days is less than the average amount of time between corrections and is not of major concern. The previous streak lasted 1326 calendar days and ended with the S&P 500 sliding 14.2% over 266 days. Past bullish periods were often devoid of corrections. Low volatility and extended age do not kill bull markets, crumbling economic data and/or geopolitical/exogenous events do.
Farewell NightOwlTrader...Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11811873942803409462noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-253123551511703819.post-8515553596928012632017-01-27T11:46:59.915-05:002017-01-27T11:46:59.915-05:00Excellent points. When I said "pullback", I meant "one-day pullback". Calling the market closing direction for the next day is hard enough - I have no clue where we're going to be 100 days from now.

But I'll note that so far two of the STA's indicators are looking positive: the First Five Days of January (which were up, and the month of January as a whole (assuming we don't crater next Monday and Tuesday).

In my personal trading, I'm now fully invested, something fairly rare for me. And I've yet to sell anything.Michelehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11446439300213187649noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-253123551511703819.post-46773129203216923332017-01-27T04:59:30.579-05:002017-01-27T04:59:30.579-05:00I hope you’re right and we’re approaching a correc...I hope you’re right and we’re approaching a correction or pull-back, so we can get down to business, because buying high is not my preferred strategy.
Although I'm not a big fan of statistics - in fact I believe as Henry Clay that “statistics are no substitute for judgment” - but as we’re approaching a perfect trifecta, here again are some interesting prophecies from Jeff Hirsch (editor of the Trading Almanac) thanks to my 20/20 hindsight:
Dec 12, 2016 - Strength generally follows strength, even during options expiration week.
Jan 4, 2017 - History also suggests that the S&P 500 will continue to rally through President Trump’s first 100 days in office as six of the last nine (66.7%) newly elected Presidents were greeted with S&P 500 gains.
Jan 5, 2017 - If the major indices can shake of today’s minor setback and break out to new all-time highs, January 2017 will likely follow the much more bullish Post-Election Year January pattern.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11811873942803409462noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-253123551511703819.post-17953772890297483272017-01-13T06:52:44.647-05:002017-01-13T06:52:44.647-05:00Two interesting excerpts from Jeff Hirsch (editor ...Two interesting excerpts from Jeff Hirsch (editor Stock Trader's Almanac): 1) “Overall the market has been more positive, on average, on the Friday before MLK day and weaker the Tuesday after. Though trading is rather mixed with a relatively even split of ups and downs on the day before and the day after. This mixed and choppy performance is possibly due to the fact that MLK day can either land in options expiration week or the week after. Both weeks have been rather volatile and weak since 1999.”
2) “Despite New Year bullishness from our early January indicators and our expectation for full-month January Barometer gains that will support our modestly bullish 2017 Forecast, a mid-January break in equities is looking increasingly likely. Since 1996 this January break has been more pronounced and more consistent. This trade, last featured in the Commodity Trader’s Almanac 2013, is beginning to set up nicely right now.
The stock market has demonstrated a tendency to retreat after the first of the New Year, especially when there has been a strong fourth quarter gain. Once the New Year begins we often see a profit taking correction. Investors tend to sell stocks to lock in profits in order to defer taxes from capital gains after the New Year begins. Even though the best time to be long the overall equity markets lasts from October through late April, this January break can certainly give short-term, nimble traders a nice return. With stocks struggling to move higher this week this trade is setting up a little later this year."
Have a nice weekend.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11811873942803409462noreply@blogger.com
